The movie studio pictured above is The Hal Roach Studios at 8822 West Washington Blvd, Culver City, California.
This studio is where the classic Laurel & Hardy and Little Rascals (Our Gang) films were made. As a kid growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, I remember coming home from school, turning on the (black and white) television and watching these films - as many of you probably did too. Watching Laurel & Hardy getting chased by a goat down what was clearly a real city street or The Little Rascals racing their home-made fire engine through what were actual residential neighborhoods got me wondering - WHERE are these places? Where did they film?
Fast forward to the mid-2010s. With the internet at my disposal and many photo and map archives online, the mystery of where these scenes were shot started to unravel. Besides obtaining a huge amount of information from these online sources, the internet also had the added benefit of allowing me to discover and communicate with people who had a similar interest - many of whom had been searching for these sites for decades before I came along.
So a big "thank you" to the following who did a lot of the early film locations discovery work - WITHOUT the benefit of the internet:
Bob Satterfield, the Wiley family (Jim, Kris and their son Jim), Richard W. Bann, Jim Dallape, Robert A. Winslow and Robert Demoss and his website "The Lucky Corner." In addition, John Bengtson (who has written three books on filming locations) has been an invaluable resource as well as Jim Pauley (who researched and wrote a book dedicated to The Three Stooges filming locations).
This site is NOT an entertainment site. The original films are incidental to the primary mission, which is to be able to take a look into the past and see what those places in these films look like 30, 40, 50... even 100+ years later. Of course, the fact that I've chosen to use scenes from some of the greatest films ever made makes it likely that you WILL be entertained as you take a trip back in time and study these old Hollywood filming locations, then and now.
If a particular Laurel and Hardy, Little Rascals, Three Stooges, Charlie Chaplin or other film, TV episode or music video covered on the site grabs your interest, chances are it is available on DVD or BluRay. Visit the Book & Video Resources page for more information and links (where available) for purchase.
I hope you enjoy the movie locations, filming locations and then and now videos and photos here and will help support my travel and production costs by becoming a long-term member.
