| Film: | Crazy Like A Fox (1926) |
| Stars: | Charley Chase, Oliver Hardy |
| Director: | Leo McCarey |

Production & Preservation Note: This scene from Crazy Like A Fox captured on film the West Gate entrance to the Berkeley Square neighborhood. Today, the entire neighborhood is gone, with no surviving traces of this once beautiful area of Los Angeles.
Charley finds himself forced by his father into an arranged marriage with a woman (played by Martha Sleeper) that he has never met. He (and Martha) both refuse and in a strange twist of fate, Charley and Martha meet, fall in love and plot how they can get out of the arranged marriage so that they can get married!
This scene from Crazy Like A Fox gives us a rare look at the Berkely Square neighborhood at a time when it was at its peak. Today, the only link to the film is the house at 2301 South Gramercy Place, built in 1905 and visible behind Oliver Hardy in one of the scenes filmed at the West Gate entrance to the neighborhood.
A bit of trivia: Hal Roach, who produced this movie, was one of the residents of Berkeley Square at the time Crazy Like A Fox was filmed!
There's a fantastic website that presents a definitive look at this neighborhood, and I encourage you all to take a look:
