Historical Production & Location Reference

Film: Lazy Days (1929)
Stars: Allen Hoskins, Joe Cobb
Director: Robert F. McGowan
Studio: Hal Roach Studios
Featured Historical Landmark:
  • Media Park: A long-time fixture of the area, Media Park has existed in various configurations - and sizes - over the past 100 years. At one time, it was bounded on the north by the Pacific Electric Railway's Venice Short Line and on the south by the Pacific Electric's line that served the beach communities of the South Bay area.

Production & Preservation Note: This scene from Lazy Days provides a great time capsule of life in 1929 Los Angeles. The Pacific Electric Railway Venice Short Line railroad tracks are clearly visible running alongside the 1929 alignment of Venice Blvd.

The Plot

The Gang are just hanging around not doing much of anything until they find out about a cutest baby contest being held, so they enter their baby brothers and sisters into the contest in the hopes of winning.

Matching Up The Filming Locations

Remaining true to tradition, this Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie features a fair amount of on location filming, this time centered on Media Park, on the West Side of Los Angeles at Culver City.

We get some great views of the Pacific Electric Railway Venice Short line which passed by on the Venice Blvd side of the park. The contrast between then and now is stark: the tracks were removed in the late 1950s and Venice Blvd was widened considerably to make use of the old railroad right-of-way.
