Some Of The More Than 2,000 Filming Location Then and Now Photos On The Site

Filming locations then and now Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie Fish Hooky photo 1932 vs now.

From the 1933 Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie Fish Hooky. This filming location then and now photo is Ballona Creek just north of Higuera Street in Culver City, California.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - The Love Bug (1925)

Filming location then and now from the 1978 episode Return of the Turks from the TV series CHiPs

An action-packed chase scene from the episode Return of the Turks from the TV series CHiPs!

Cop shows never disappoint when it comes to on location filming and this scene from CHiPs is no exception. Ponch and Jon's pursuit of the bad guys takes them right through the heart of Culver City, California, providing us with great views of the area as it was in 1978.

While the views are great, what we see of downtown Culver City is not. When this scene was filmed, Culver City was in sharp decline. The sun-drenched, bustling streets and stores that we've seen from Laurel and Hardy movies (and others) filmed here in the 1920s and 1930s are dark and mostly deserted. Many of the buildings from Culver City's early days in the 1920s are still there, but by this time, they look worn and tired.

It wouldn't be until the early 2010s when the renovation of the historic Culver Hotel and the massive Culver Steps development was completed that the area once again thrived.

In the filming location then and now photo above, we see the chase passing in front of The Culver Studios at 9336 Washington Blvd. As part of the redevelopment of the area, this section of Washington Blvd has been turned into a pedestrian mall that attracts hundreds of people each day.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - The Love Bug (1925)

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - The Love Bug (1925)

Filming location then and now from the 1925 Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie The Love Bug

Made in 1925, The Love Bug is another of the Our Gang / The Little Rascals movies that did quite a bit of on location filming.

Many of the locations used in the movie are within the two blocks centered around the intersection of Woodbine Street and Motor Avenue in the Palms section of Los Angeles. The series did so much filming in this particular area that the filmmakers have created a virtual time-capsule of this part of the city.

After watching these films from the 1920s and early 1930s, if you were to walk these same streets in Palms today, you would find it hard to believe that this neighborhood was once a sleepy residential area with plenty of open space. Today, it's an urban landscape where every inch of land has either been paved over or built up.

HOWEVER... in the closing scene of this movie, we see The Gang running down Woodbine Street just a block east of Motor Avenue and those trees visible at the left hand side of the frame are still standing today, 100 years later! This is truly remarkable as another new, high density apartment building was built on the lot adjacent to these trees a few years ago and yet, the developer kept the trees standing.

Charley Chase - On The Wrong Trek (1936)

Charley Chase - On The Wrong Trek (1936)

Los Angeles filming location then and now from the 1936 Charley Chase movie On The Wrong Trek

Charley Chase starred in his own series of short comedy movies in the 1920s up through the mid-1930s at the Hal Roach Studios. On The Wrong Trek is one of the last in the series.

Many of the Charley Chase movies from the 1920s and early 1930s filmed outdoors in and around Culver City, California. By 1936, filming on location had become the exception at the Hal Roach Studios, however this movie has several scenes shot outside the confines of the studio.

In the then and now filming location photo comparison above, Charley, his wife (played by Rosina Lawrence) and his mother-in-law (Bonita Weber) have stopped at a gas station. The location is 9850 Exposition Blvd in the Palms section of Los Angeles.

At first glance, you would be hard-pressed to see that this is the same location 90 years later. The bridge in the background seen in the frame from the film was the Pacific Electric Railway's Santa Monica "Air Line" single-track crossing over National Blvd at Exposition Blvd. The bridge still stands today, though a second railway bridge has been built a bit closer to the camera to accommodate the second track of today's "Expo Line" light rail corridor.

Also in the frame from the movie, you can see wide open spaces on the other side of the bridge. Today, the massive 10 lane Interstate 10 highway bridge occupies the space.

Charley Chase - On The Wrong Trek (1936)

Charley Chase - On The Wrong Trek (1936)

Filming location of Venice Beach in Los Angeles from the 1921 Buster Keaton movie The High Sign

Buster Keaton, like his peers Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin, filmed many scenes from his movies throughout the Los Angeles area. Watching these films today, they're still great comedies but also a fascinating look into the past.

The High Sign filmed on location in three of the Los Angeles area "beach towns" along Santa Monica Bay: Redondo Beach, Long Beach and Venice Beach.

Of the three, Venice Beach has been the most popular filming location over the years, with hundreds of movie and TV episode scenes filmed there. For a great look at Venice Beach in the early 1930s log into the site and click here:

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Fish Hooky - Filming Locations Then and Now Photo Gallery

In the scene above, Buster Keaton is standing in front of 1811 Ocean Front Walk in Venice Beach. In 1921, the area had not yet been completely built up, though it would be just a few years after this movie filmed there. 1811 Ocean Front Walk (built in 1916) still stands today, though it has been extensively remodeled.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Free Wheeling (1932)

Filming location then and now from the 1932 Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie Free Wheeling.

One of the best Our Gang / The Little Rascals movies in the series, Free Wheeling is packed with action and on location filming.

In 1932, Spanky had just joined the series and he gets some good lines, but by this time, Stymie and Dickie were the stars and it's their relationship that adds greatly to this movie. Dickie plays a rich kid who "craves excitement" and Stymie is working with the other kids in the neighborhood providing a taxi service.

The Gang's taxi is a wonder to behold, one of the more memorable contraptions in the series. Dickie offers to pay for a ride in the taxi. There's a slight delay when the mule (which served as the "engine") gets drunk and runs away. Stymie finds a rope and ties the taxi to the back of a nearby truck and the truck pulls away with the taxi in tow.

The filming locations for this Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie are familiar ones, all located in the Palms neighborhood on the west side of Los Angeles and used in many other films in the series. In the climactic final scenes of the movie, the taxi has lost its brakes and is "free wheeling" down the very steep hill on Overland Avenue, ending up in a haystack at the corner of Overland Avenue and Rose Avenue, as shown in the photo above.

Aerial imagery from 1928 through 2025 shows that the vacant lot where the haystack was located has never been built upon. Today, a parking lot for a strip mall that was built in 1985 occupies that part of the lot. So, if you were to visit 3300 Overland Avenue today and stand in the parking lot right in front of the entrance to 3300 Overland Avenue #103, you would be standing at the exact spot where the haystack was located!

Michael Jackson - Thriller (1983)

Filming location then and now from the 1983 Michael Jackson music video for his song Thriller.

Michael Jackson's groundbreaking long-form music video from 1983.

As the music starts, we get a great view of the Palace Theatre located at 630 South Broadway in downtown Los Angeles.

Built in 1910 as the Orpheum Theatre, its name was changed to the Palace Theatre in 1926. Today, the outside of the theatre is in not-so-good shape, however I have heard from several people that the owners still rent out the theatre for events and concerts, at least as of this writing in October, 2025.

The theatre was designated as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural monument in 1989.

Reefer Madness (1936)

Filming location then and now in West Hollywood from the movie Reefer Madness.

Reefer Madness - the legendary cult classic movie from the 1930s!

The movie was filmed on a very low budget, with most scenes filmed at the United Artists studios at 1041 North Formosa Avenue in West Hollywood, California. The one scene filmed on location was shot on Santa Monica Blvd. just outside the studio.

In this scene, we see a car being driven at high speed by actor Warren McCollum in front of what was then 7291 Santa Monica Blvd.  The building dates back to 1929 and for most of its existence was a tire shop. At some point, this particular block was redesignated the "7300 block" and today the building is 7335 Santa Monica Blvd.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - The Pooch (1932)

Los Angeles filming location then and now from the Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie The Pooch

The dog catcher has Stymie's dog Petey and Stymie needs to come up with $5 by the end of the day to save him. Stymie's prayers for the $5 are answered when a gust of wind blows a $5 bill out of a lady's hands and it lands right in front of Stymie!

The above filming location then and now photo shows Stymie and the Gang in the alley between Motor Avenue and Vinton Avenue, just south of Woodbine Street in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles. In 1932 when this Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie was made, this area had a distinctly small-town look, with plenty of open spaces and charming wood-frame houses that dated back to the early 1900s.

Today, the single family houses are long gone, replaced by apartment buildings and virtually every inch of land has been built on and paved over. The only building that still exists in both the "then" and the "now" views of this filming location is the Palms Elementary School, which you can see at the end of the alley.

Harold Lloyd - Get Out And Get Under (1920)

Los Angeles filming location then and now from the Harold Lloyd comedy movie Get Out And Get Under

Harold Lloyd takes us along for a ride as he rushes to get to his amateur theatre group's performance. Filmed almost entirely on location, this movie is an amazing time capsule of the Los Angeles area in 1920.

The photo above is a great illustration of just how much the Los Angeles area has changed in just 100 years. We're looking north up National Blvd at the intersection of Manning Avenue in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles. Wooded areas, open fields and telegraph poles dominate the 1920 view, while the present-day view shows the "progress" that has been made since 1920.

Harold Lloyd - Get Out And Get Under (1920)

Filming location then and now at the Los Angeles River from the Charlie Chaplin movie The Idle Class

Charlie Chaplin sneaks into an upscale golf resort and havoc ensues!

As with many of the Charlie Chaplin short comedy movies, this one makes ample use of on location filming. The then and now photo above shows us one of the scenes from the "golf course." Shot on the banks of the Los Angeles River (prior to it being made into a concrete flood control channel), we get a great view of the river in its natural state. Today, this location is the Rio de Porciuncula Picnic Area at 3207 Los Feliz Blvd on the east bank of the Los Angeles River. The view is looking north.

Hunter - Scrap Metal (1986)

Culver City filming location then and now from TV series Hunter episode Scrap Metal.

The episode Scrap Metal from the TV series Hunter in 1986 filmed on location at several locations in Culver City, California. Culver City was a popular filming location for the series. Many episodes featured an establishing shot of the exterior of the old City Hall building to indicate to viewers that this was where their police headquarters was located.

This scene, early in the episode,  was filmed in front of  8564 Washington Blvd (built in 1926) about a mile from the downtown core. All the buildings seen in this scene from the episode are still standing with just a few minor alterations.

Hunter - Scrap Metal (1986)

Then and now view of the corner of Hollywood and Highland from TV show Hunter "Scrap Metal" episode

Hunter's partner McCall (Stepfanie Kramer) goes undercover on the rough streets of Hollywood. This scene was filmed at the corner of Hollywood Blvd and Highland Avenue.

The Hollywood First National Bank building stands prominently in the background. Built in 1928, this building has appeared in many films over the years. You can see it here in the opening scene of the 1945 short film Are Animals Actors?

Hunter - Scrap Metal (1986)

Then and now filming location in The Culver Hotel from the TV series Hunter episode Scrap Metal

The Culver Hotel at 9400 Culver Blvd in Culver City, California, has appeared in dozens (and dozens) of movies and TV episodes since it was built in 1923/24. In fact, several films on this site show the hotel under construction!

The hotel is perhaps most famous as the place where the actors portraying The Munchkins in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz stayed during filming. This chapter of the hotel's history is explored in the 1981 movie Under The Rainbow.

At the time this episode of Hunter was filmed, the hotel's glory days had long passed and the building had been converted to small, cheap apartments with no doubt some dubious tenants! Thanks to a multi-million dollar restoration completed in 2014, the hotel is in great shape and a very popular place. If you're in the area, make it a point to stop in for cocktails and a meal.

Explore more of the Culver Hotel's past here: History of The Culver Hotel

This episode of Hunter gives us a rare look INSIDE the entrance lobby to the building.

Hunter - Scrap Metal (1986)

Then and now view: Culver City California filming location from TV series Hunter episode Scrap Metal

Right across Main Street from The Culver Hotel sat The Adams Hotel, a building which also has appeared in numerous movies and TV episodes, from early Our Gang / The Little Rascals films and Laurel and Hardy movies, to episodes of Charlie's Angels and Starsky & Hutch.

The entire block where the Adams Hotel used to stand had been totally cleared by the mid 1990s and sat as a surface parking lot for nearly two decades until the massive Culver Steps development was built.

Today, the section of Main Street seen in the top of the above photo from the episode no longer exists, as it's been converted into a pedestrian mall, with a huge multi-level parking garage underneath it.

The building seen in the background is the administration building of The Culver Studios. Dating back to 1918, this movie studio was built before Culver City even existed!

More on the history of The Culver Studios here.

Madonna - Open Your Heart (1986)

Then and now view: Filming location Madonna music video for her song Open Your Heart. 1986 vs Now.

This groundbreaking music video from Madonna generated quite a bit of controversy when it was released in late 1986. Despite misgivings that the subject matter of the video went over the line, MTV did give this video heavy airplay and that probably helped the song reach #1 on the Billboard Top 100 chart in the USA on February 7, 1987.

The first half of the music video was filmed inside a studio, but the second half was shot on location on West Court Street just a short distance from downtown Los Angeles. An active oil well on the site of the adult theater set kept this otherwise vacant lot empty until just a few years ago when an apartment building was finally built on the site.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Fly My Kite (1931)

Then and now view: Filming location from the Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie Fly My Kite.

A great entry in the Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie series, the climactic final scenes were shot outside on location in a large field off Overland Avenue in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The photos above show how the area has changed over the years. Several of the original homes that were seen in the 1931 film managed to survive until the mid 2010s. Today, the field is no more. Several apartment houses sit on the site and those homes visible across the street in the 1931 and 2015 photos shown above have finally been replaced by a massive new apartment building.

The Ladykillers (1955)

Then and now view: London filming location from 1955 movie The Ladykillers starring Alec Guinness.

This 1955 movie stars Alec Guinness, Herbert Lom, Peter Sellers and Katie Johnson as Mrs. Wilberforce. A gang of criminals (led by Alec Guinness) robs a bank's armored car and uses kindly little old lady Mrs. Wilberforce to (unknowingly) transport the stolen money back to her house. There's a lot more to the plot, and I strongly encourage you to watch this movie - it's very funny, in a British kind of way!

The photo above shows us Alec Guinness walking towards Mrs. Wilberforce's house. The view is looking north from in front of 34 Argyle Street in London. Every building seen in the film in 1955 at this filming location is still around today, and largely unchanged.

Then and now view: Filming location from The Three Stooges movie False Alarms. 1936 vs now.

The Three Stooges are employed as fire fighters in this comedy short from 1936. As was typical of the early Three Stooges movies, several scenes were filmed on location.

This particular scene's filming location was at the north end of North Larchmont Blvd near Melrose Avenue. As you can see in the then and now movie location photo above, not very much has changed over the decades, with the exception of the Los Angeles Railway trolley tracks no longer running down the middle of the street.

Then and now location: Boyz II Men “Motownphilly” 1991 music video. Penns Landing in Philadelphia.

A number one hit in the USA in the summer of 1991, the music video for the Boyz II Men song Motownphilly was filmed on location using filming locations in the group's home town of Philadelphia. This music video is a great time capsule of the center city area, and most of those locations have held up quite well and look just as nice today as they did back then.

The filming location then and now photo above is from an early scene in the music video. That's the Delaware River and New Jersey in the distance. The group is dancing at Penn's Landing.

Laurel and Hardy - Going Bye-Bye! (1934)

Then and now view: Culver City filming location from 1934 Laurel and Hardy movie Going Bye Bye

A great example of a movie inadvertently giving us a look at a historic site as it was in the distant past, the Laurel and Hardy movie Going Bye-Bye! filmed on location right in front of the old City Hall building in Culver City, California. This building appeared in dozens of movies and TV episodes throughout the 20th century up until it was torn down in the mid 1990s.

The above movie location then and now photo shows the entrance to the building as it was in 1934, and the replica of that entrance that occupies the site today.

Thelma Todd and Zasu Pitts - Sneak Easily (1932)

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Small Talk (1929)

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Small Talk (1929)

Then and now view: Filming location from the Zasu Pitts and Thelma Todd movie Sneak Easily (1932).

In the early 1930s, producer Hal Roach was looking to duplicate the success of his Laurel and Hardy movies with a female version of the team. Zasu Pitts and Thelma Todd took the roles of Laurel and Hardy, respectively, and this movie is one of the best in the series.

This particular scene was filmed on location at the Pacific Electric Railway's Fletcher Viaduct just to the north of Downtown Los Angeles. Originally an all wood trestle built in 1904, in 1927 the center section was replaced with a steel section and this is what we see in the movie. The viaduct lasted until 1959 and today, all that remains are the concrete footings, which have been designated by Los Angeles as a cultural monument.

The then and now photo above is from the famous parking lot scene from Madea Goes To Jail. In it, Madea takes revenge on a woman who steals her parking space (which, unbelievably, Madea was waiting patiently for!).

The movie location for this scene is a strip mall at 5590 Mableton Parkway in Mableton, Georgia, just a short distance from the Tyler Perry Studios. The anchor store is no longer a K-Mart and the facade of the former K-Mart store seen in the first part of the scene has been changed to reflect the new tenant, but the part of the mall shown at the end of the scene in the then and now photo above is basically unchanged.

This Laurel and Hardy movie was made prior to the establishment of the two characters we normally associate with the team. Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Teacher's Pet (1930)

Then and now view: Movie location Our Gang / The Little Rascals film Teachers Pet. 1930 vs now.

This Our Gang / Little Rascals movie, Teacher's Pet, is the best film in the series. The plot is simple: The kids have a new teacher, Miss Crabtree, and they try to sabotage her first day. Things backfire when they discover that Miss Crabtree is just as sweet as their previous teacher, Miss McGillicuddy.

The then and now photo above shows Miss Crabtree dropping off Jackie Cooper (presumably) near the school. This filming location in 1930 at the intersection of Venice Blvd and La Cienega Blvd featured a large viaduct for the Pacific Electric Railway's Venice Short Line which ran down the middle of Venice Blvd all the way to Venice Beach. Back then, it was a very quick and efficient way to get to the beach from downtown Los Angeles. If you were to drive the same route today, it would take twice as long compared to 1930. So much for "progress."

The Taxi Boys - Bring 'Em Back A Wife (1933)

Movie location then and now filming location from The Taxi Boys movie Bring Em Back A Wife.

Most of you have probably never heard of The Taxi Boys series of short comedy films made in the early 1930s, unless you've done a "deep dive" on this website where several of their movies are covered. The films featured many of the supporting actors from the Laurel and Hardy films and the Little Rascals movies, along with the same background tunes. No coincidence, as these films were all made by the Hal Roach Studios!

The series is also notable due to the director that producer Hal Roach hired: Del Lord. Though not well known for his work on The Taxi Boys series, Lord would go on to direct many of The Three Stooges best comedy shorts at Columbia Pictures starting in the mid 1930s.

The Taxi Boys films were notable not because they were particularly good (though some in the series were), but because they made extensive use of on location filming all around the west side of Los Angeles. When viewing these films today, we are basically time traveling and seeing large parts of the area as they were prior to being developed into the housing developments and strip malls that we see in these parts of Los Angeles today.

The then and now film location photo above shows the Culver Hotel in downtown Culver City, California. Back in 1933, it was surrounded by busy streets. The street on the east side of the hotel (Washington Blvd) has been rerouted and in its place today is a pedestrian mall.

The Stranglers - Golden Brown (Music Video) (1982)

Punk rock band The Stranglers came up with a most UN-punk song in Golden Brown which prominently features a harpsichord!

For the music video, Leighton House in London was chosen as the filming location, and more specifically the Arab Hall. Read more about this magnificent room by clicking here: Leighton House Arab Hall

The music video cuts between footage shot at Leighton House and stock footage filmed in Egypt and the Middle East.

When this music video was released in 1982, another English band - Spandau Ballet - likely took notice and used the Arab Hall at Leighton House as the filming location for the music video for their song Gold in 1983.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - The First Seven Years (1930)

Then and now view: Filming location from Our Gang / The Little Rascals film The First Seven Years

The Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie The First Seven Years is another of the early "talkie" films in the series, with most of the movie filmed outdoors. This time, the filming location was the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Back in 1930 when this movie was made, the Palms had a very small town look about it. Single family homes with beautiful lawns lined the tree-lined streets. Then, in the 1950s, the City of Los Angeles rezoned the Palms neighborhood for "multi-family units" which meant that one by one, the beautiful homes dating back to the early 1900s were demolished and in their place, architecturally uninspiring apartment buildings took their place.

The then and now filming location photo above shows Mary Ann on location on the front lawn of 3415 Mentone Avenue. Today, the lawn has been paved over as part of the parking lot for the apartment building (built in 1968) that now occupies the site. The tree seen in this movie was cut down in the 1970s. The small patch of grass visible near the center of the photo is where the tree used to stand.

Then and now view: Culver City movie location from the Charley Chase film His Wooden Wedding.

Charley Chase starred in a very popular series of short comedy films in the 1920s and 1930s, many of them filmed in the downtown core of Culver City, California.

In this filming location then and now scene from the movie, the camera is on the Culver Blvd side of the historic Culver Hotel, looking west. The hotel - which is now over 100 years old - has been beautifully restored and is exactly as it was when this movie was filmed in 1925.

What isn't the same is Culver Blvd. In the top photo, the poles visible held the wires used by the Pacific Electric Railway which at the time ran right down the middle of Culver Blvd. In those days,  Culver City residents could hop on a train to the beach or east to downtown Los Angeles.

Unfortunately, the network of Pacific Electric Railway lines were abandoned in the 1950s. The tracks running down the middle of Culver Blvd were still in place (though mostly covered over by asphalt) as late as the 1980s. We catch a glimpse of them in the 1977 episode Moving Violation of the TV series CHiPs which you can see on page 2 in the TV Series Filming Locations Photo Galleries section of the site by clicking here: CHiPs - Moving Violation - Filming Locations Photo Gallery

The Gang builds their OWN fire engine and the rich kid challenges them to a race down a very steep hill.

Laurel and Hardy - Their Purple Moment (1928)

The film location used in this Laurel and Hardy movie is in the West Adams district of Los Angeles in front of 1750 West 22nd Street. The home seen in the film still stands today and is now over 100 years old (built in 1923).

When the I-10 Santa Monica Freeway was built in the 1960s, the freeway planners decided to build directly across the street from this house. As a result, this historic film location came within 50 feet of being buried under the I-10 freeway. Fortunately, this entire block of beautiful old homes - some built as early as 1905 - are still here today.

Scoutmaster Charley Chase is taking his troop out on a hike into the country to Idyllwild but gets lost on the way. He asks a traffic cop for directions during which time he causes a massive traffic jam at the corner of Motor Avenue and Tabor Street in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles.

This intersection was very popular with filmmakers, having appeared in several  Our Gang / The Little Rascals movies in the 1920s, several other Charley Chase movies of the early and mid-1930s and even in a Charlie's Angels episode!

Unfortunately, as is too often the case in Los Angeles, no building stands forever even if it is a historic movie location. This sequence of photos shows us the commercial building that occupied the northeast corner of Motor and Tabor as it was in 1933, its last days in 2017, the site after the building had been demolished, and the modern apartment building that occupies the site today.

Unfortunately, the battle is taking place in an area of space inhabited by beings who despise violence. They beam Captain Kirk and The Gorn Captain to a desolate planet where they can settle their differences directly in a fight to the death.

The desolate planet scenes were filmed on location about a 45 minute drive north of downtown Los Angeles at the iconic Vaszquez Rocks. A very popular location not only for several Star Trek productions (Voyager, Picard and more), but also westerns and serials going back to the 1930s (and likely before).

The Three Stooges usually filmed their comedy short movies within the confines of the Columbia Pictures Studios lot located on the corner of Sunset and Gower in Hollywood. When an outdoor location was called for, most times they would head over to the Columbia Pictures "ranch" in the San Fernando Valley.

But sometimes, they would actually go out on location on the streets of Los Angeles and film scenes on location. This film - Calling All Curs - includes a scene that was filmed about a half mile from the studio, just east of today's 101 freeway.

The building seen in the movie at 5600 Fernwood Avenue is still there, and the sidewalk may very well be the same as you can see in the movie location then and now photo comparison above.

Then and now view: Filming location from Laurel and Hardy movie Men O War. 1929 vs today.

In 1929 at the dawn of the "talking pictures" era, most films were being made indoors on sound stages. The staff at the Hal Roach Studios though bucked the practice and bravely ventured out on location with their newfangled sound recording equipment and made quite a few films in 1929 on location. The Little Rascals movie RAILROADIN' is an excellent example.

This 1929 Laurel and Hardy movie, MEN O' WAR, is another great example - filmed almost entirely outdoors and on location at the (then) very beautiful Hollenbeck Park in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Cat, Dog & Co. (1929)

Then and now view: Movie location Our Gang / The Little Rascals film Cat Dog and Co. 1930 vs today

Most of this Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie was filmed on location at the SAME location used in dozens of films in the series. Motor Avenue near the intersection of Woodbine Street in The Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles was an often used film location for Our Gang / The Little Rascals series starting with the very first film (Our Gang in 1922).

By using the same filming locations through the years 1922 - 1932, the film makers have left us with an amazing time capsule to explore this neighborhood when it had a very "small town" look and feel.

Today, while the streets and alleys are all in the same places - and even a few trees that were captured on film 90+ years ago are still standing - only a few of the buildings seen in the films are still around.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Cat, Dog & Co. (1929)

Then and now view: Filming location Charley Chase movie All Wet. 1924 vs today. Culver City.

The bulk of this Charley Chase comedy short was filmed in one of the oldest residential neighborhoods in Culver City, California. At the time (1924), the streets had been recently paved and the water, sewer and electric utilities were in place waiting for the lots to be sold and the homes to be built.

During the filming, a few homes here on the 8900 block of Carson Street had already been built and we can see several others under construction. Many of these homes still stand today.

The movie location then and now photo comparison above dramatically illustrates how the neighborhood has evolved over the last 100 years.

Laurel and Hardy - Big Business (1929) - See 2025 Update Below!

Then and now view: Laurel and Hardy movie Big Business filming location. Los Angeles. 1929 vs now.

It's the holiday season and Laurel and Hardy are in Big Business selling Christmas trees door-to-door - with predictable results!

This film was shot entirely on location on the streets of Culver City, California and the nearby Cheviot Hills section of Los Angeles. Fortunately (amazingly!) the house at 10281 Dunleer Drive that is nearly destroyed by the end of the movie is still standing and almost completely unchanged since 1929.

Just a small donation ($6 for just a one month, non renewing membership) gives you full access to all the content on the site including all the then and now filming locations photos from this Laurel and Hardy movie here:

Nat Carr - Traffic Tangle (1930) - Part 1

Then and now view: Movie location from the 1930 film Traffic Tangle starring Nat Carr. Culver City.

This film is an early Pathe "talkie" comedy short that has a very basic premise: A man (Nat Carr playing the character Max Ginsberg) buys a new car and tries to take his family out for a drive but instead ends up causing a huge traffic jam. The local traffic cop is not amused.

Filmed almost entirely on location, the movie location for the film's traffic jam sequences was Main Street and Culver Blvd in Culver City. This was a very popular film location for comedies made in the 1920s and early 1930s and is easily recognized in several Laurel and Hardy films, plus a few of The Little Rascal movies. This intersection was also extensively used once again by TV series in the 1970s/80s such as Hunter, Charlie's Angels and Starsky and Hutch.

Each of these series is covered on the website here:

Nat Carr - Traffic Tangle (1930) - Part 2

Then and now view: Movie location from the 1930 film Traffic Tangle starring Nat Carr. Culver City.

The second half of the film takes place at the home of the traffic cop, just a few blocks from the movie location of the traffic jam. The house at 9020 Carson Street seen in the film was just a few years old at the time this movie was made and today it appears virtually unchanged, as you can see in this movie location then and now photo comparison above.

Our Gang / The Little Rascals - Dogs Of War (1923)

Filming location then and now from the 1923 Our Gang / The Little Rascals movie Dogs of War

The Gang and a rival gang in the neighborhood are engaged in trench warfare!

This early entry in the Our Gang series has two distinct sections: The first half of the movie takes us onto the battlefield as the hostilities rage on, while the second half of the movie has the Gang running loose in a real movie studio where they disrupt production and eventually are chased off the studio grounds.

The movie studio scenes were filmed at the Hal Roach Studios (which produced this movie) and gives us amazing views of the studio grounds and some of the standing sets that we see in so many of the Our Gang / The Little Rascals, Laurel and Hardy and other comedies the studios produced in the 1920s and 1930s.

However, the then and now photo shown above takes place at the end of the movie, as the Gang are fleeing a skunk that has somehow attached itself to Farina in one of the battle trenches. This amazing photo shows a Culver City, California neighborhood literally being built around the action in the movie. Today's residents of this quiet street likely have no idea that their street was an on location site of a classic comedy movie over 100 years ago!

Laurel and Hardy - Big Business (1929) - 2025 Update

Filming location then and now from the Laurel and Hardy movie Big Business

Laurel and Hardy are selling Christmas trees, with spectacularly dismal results!

The action focuses on two locations - one at a home in Culver City, California and the other at a home in the Cheviot Hills section of Los Angeles.

Up until late 2024, the house at the first location remained standing and in excellent condition. In fact, the owner of this home was very much aware of its special history as a filming location in this classic Laurel and Hardy film.

Unfortunately, the owner passed away, the house was sold and the new owners apparently had other ideas for the property. The house was demolished and as of early 2025 a new home was being built. Of all the houses on that street that could have been sold and demolished, it would have to be THIS one!

There's good news, though. The second home used as a filming location still stands in Cheviot Hills and is in excellent condition.

Max Davidson - The Boy Friend (1928) - Part 1 of 2

Culver City filming location then and now from the 1928 Max Davidson comedy movie The Boy Friend

The Boy Friend is a wonderful Max Davidson comedy short movie made by the Hal Roach Studios in 1928. It benefits greatly from being filmed almost entirely on location in downtown Culver City, California. It's not only a very entertaining movie, but also a valuable time capsule.

We're featuring two filming location then and now photos from the complete photo gallery of filming locations from this movie. Above, we see a scene filmed on Main Street in front of the Peerless Bakery, which today is the Grand Casino Bakery and Cafe (they've got great food at reasonable prices!). There have been a few alterations to the outside of the building since 1928, but what you see in the comparison photo above is in fact the same building, then and now.

Max Davidson - The Boy Friend (1928) - Part 2 of 2

Filming location then and now from 1928 Max Davidson movie The Boy Friend in downtown Culver City

The second then and now filming location photo comparison from The Boy Friend illustrates the big changes to downtown Culver City in just the past 10 years.

We're looking south on Main Street at Culver Blvd towards Washington Blvd in the top frame from the movie with the Main Street entrance to The Culver Hotel at the right. The second photo shows the same location, however Main Street between Culver and Washington has now been converted into a pedestrian mall. The recent (2024) photo shows that the pedestrian mall has now become the entrance to the massive Culver Steps development's underground parking garage.
