White Town's Your Woman Music Video: A Rare Look At 1997 Derby, England

In 1997, the infectious synth-pop track Your Woman by White Town raced up the music charts worldwide, hitting number one in the UK and becoming an international sensation. Remarkably, the brilliant track was entirely written, produced, and performed by Jyoti Mishra, who is White Town. Operating as a true one-man band, Mishra created an enduring indie-pop masterpiece from his home studio.

Beyond the song's unique sound, the accompanying visuals provided an unforgettable, stylized time capsule of a historic English city.

The Your Woman Music Video: Capturing Derby on Film

For the Your Woman music video, Jyoti Mishra and director Mark Adcock opted for a highly stylized, 1920s silent movie aesthetic. Complete with a black-and-white presentation, vintage title cards, and expressive acting by Chloe Treend, the video perfectly complemented the track's iconic 1930s Al Bowlly horn sample.

Filmed over a single weekend on a lean budget, the production used the streets of Derby, England as its set. The result is a stunning visual record of the East Midlands city as it looked in the late 1990s. Today, most of these outdoor backdrops remain standing and are virtually unchanged, making the city a prime destination for music video history enthusiasts.

Then and Now: The Famous Derby Ram Statue Filming Location

The then and now filming location comparison photo above highlights one of the video's most recognizable backdrops: The famous Derby Ram statue.

  • The Location: Positioned prominently at the bustling pedestrian junction of Albion Street and East Street in the heart of the city center.

  • The History: Commissioned as a gift to the city, this massive stone sculpture was created by artist Michael Pegler and unveiled in 1995—just two years before White Town immortalized it on film.

For music fans, urban explorers, or anyone planning a sightseeing trip to Derbyshire, tracking down this vibrant intersection is one of the ultimate must-visit things to do in the city.
